Why I fell out of love with reading...| prettylittlewriter

I have always been in love with reading, ever since I was a little girl. My Dad used to read me stories about Monsters that lived in bogs called 'stinky poo', and my Mum introduced me to the wonderful world of Harry Potter when I was only 6 years old. She used to read it to me each night, doing the voices of each character in such a unique way; it is a memory I cherish very much.

I remember being in year 3 at Primary School, bringing the Goblet of Fire (which was a bloomin' HUGE book!) with me and being one of the most advanced readers in class for what I was able to read.

Reading is what inspired me to start writing, and in turn, is probably the reason I enjoy writing a blog. There is something about putting words to paper, or in this case, on screen, for others to see and enjoy with me.

So why then, haven't I touched a book in almost two years?

It all began when I started my first year at University. I didn't get to take the course I originally wanted because I didn't get the grades to make it into the University I had planned on going to. I originally wanted to study creative writing, to expand my knowledge and increase my skills to eventually become an author.
But since this was no longer possible with the grades I got, I decided to go to a much smaller university and study English Literature.
I didn't see this as a big deal at the time, I mean, I loved books, so why wouldn't I love working on them every day?

Alas, I was incredibly wrong.

Within the first term, we were asked to read things such as Homer's Iliad. How many of you reading this now have experienced this book yourselves?
If you have, you know just how difficult that is.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about, let's just say its this Ancient Greek 'Epic Poem'. And what they mean by Epic is that it's 50 million pages long!!

Not only was the poem ridiculously long, it was also in a very old language that was very, VERY difficult to read. If you weren't concentrating on it, you wouldn't understand it. Period.

Having to focus so hard on a story I wasn't invested in, and I didn't really enjoy, was the beginning of my loss of passion for books.
Don't get me wrong, University also introduced me to some amazing books that I am so thankful for, such as The Great Gatsby & The Secret Garden.
But reading around 2/3's of books I really disliked, EVERY SINGLE DAY, and having to analyse them in such depth, for 3 years, just killed my passion.

I cannot say I haven't read ANY books since I finished University, because I have. One book I really enjoyed reading is We Were Liars by E. Lockhart.
But within this one and half years period since graduating, this is just one out of TWO books I have read.

I used to be able to read books with hundreds of pages within days, all consecutively. I remember going on holiday to visit my Grandparents in Ireland, and on the drive to Wales for the ferry I read almost 3 books in the car, within hours. Each book had about 300 pages each!

To think about how little reading I have done in the past year or so, upsets me immensely. And although I do have spare time in which I could potentially be reading something, I'll binge-watch Netflix or find something else to do.
I no longer sit and think, 'I've got some free time, I should read this!'

Which is why I have decided that I am going to change that.
Starting from tonight, I am going to start reading a book I have had for a while, and update my twitter each day with how far I have got with it.
For those of you who follow my twitter feed, if I don't tweet about it, tweet me and tell me to buck my ideas up!!

I am also going to start doing little reviews on each book once I finish them. So keep your eyes peeled for something (hopefully!) within the next few weeks!

Reading once was an incredibly important part of my life, and I want to get that feeling back. It may then inspire me to finally get my ass in gear and finish my own novel that I started 6 years ago and still haven't finished!

But for now, I am going to take it one chapter at a time...

Christmas Tree Hunt | prettylittlewriter

One thing I have never been able to do at Christmas is pick my own real Christmas tree. My parents have always had a fake one, which isn't a bad thing, there are some very good things about have a fake tree, including the fact that you can re-use it year on year.
However, this year I am in my own place with my own living room, which means I could finally pick my own tree!

I went to a lovely place called Cotley farm down here in Devon with my niece and her little family. They had lots of animals for my great-nephew to fawn over, including BABY REiNDEERS, and the staff were incredibly helpful when it came to picking my tree.
I literally had no idea what I was doing or how to choose one, so it was great to have someone at hand who knew one or two things about choosing the right tree.

I had the best time spending the day with my family,
and I cannot wait to decorate the tree!

Pumpkin Picking | prettylittlewriter

It's a well known fact to those of you who read my blog, that I am incredibly obsessed with all things Autumn and Halloween. So as we get ever so closer to all hallows-eve, I thought it time I grab some pumpkins ready for the festive season! I have heard many people mention pick-your-own fruit and vegetable farms, but I wasn't sure whether there were any in my local area. With the help of good 'ol Google, I discovered Darts Farm, which is actually a very popular place down here in Sunny Devon! However, I wasn't aware you could PYO here, until now!
I wasn't sure what to expect when we first arrived; I'd assumed there wouldn't be much selection left as the celebration of Halloween is becoming ever-so popular now over here in the UK. However, there were plenty to choose from, and I managed to pick some pretty impressive pumpkins!
Have you been pumpkin picking? If not, I really recommend it, it's such a fun experience, finding the diamonds in amongst the rough and just walking through fields and fields of beautiful nature. It truly is a magical, autumnal experience!

Baking | Pumpkin Rice Krispie Bites | prettylittlewriter

Baking in the Autumn months always seems so much more fun and exciting than any other time of the year, I think it's because you begin baking more homely and cosy puddings and cakes, such as Apple Pie, Pumpkin Pie and so on.

I found the recipe to these rice krispie bites on Pinterest, and I thought they were absolutely adorable! They are fun to create and so simple, it is a great activity to do with children.

The ingredients you will need are;
- Rice Krispies (6 cups)
- 5 1/2 cups of mini Marshmallows
- Butter (3tbsp)
- 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract
- Red & Yellow Food Colouring (Or Orange Gel Colouring)
- Chocolate Icing (The actual recipe asked for mini tootsie rolls, however living in the UK they are hard to come by, so I cut up icing instead)
- Any decorations for the eyes, nose and mouth (I used Black Food Colouring which can also be used as icing)

The first thing to do is melt the butter in a pan and then add your vanilla extract.

Then add your marshmallows and mix until those have all melted into the butter.

Whilst waiting for your marshmallows to melt, you can chop up your chocolate icing into small rectangular pieces that you will roll in your hands and add as stems once the krispies are ready.

Then you add your food colouring until you arrive at your desired shade of orange, then add in your rice krispies and mix until fully coated. Take off the hob once fully coated and leave to cool for a few minutes.

This is where it tends to get a little messy! The recipe said to use your hands to create pumpkin shaped balls of the rice krispies, however they just kept sticking to my hands, so I used my spatula and a well rounded spoon to create the circular shape on a plate for each one. Then I added the stems made from chocolate icing.

These little treats look so cute! Once they have hardened and are no longer falling apart, they are ready to eat!

I also chose to add some black colouring to create pumpkin faces on just a few of them, they were quite cool but food colouring isn't quite as tasty as icing!

If you like the look of this recipe and create your own, I would love to see your results!
These would be a great addition to any Halloween party, especially for children!

Halloween Playlist | prettylittlewriter

With Halloween fast approaching, I have been listening to A LOT of Halloween music.
From Michael Jackson to the Backstreet Boys, these songs always get me in the Halloween spirit!

These are my top five songs for the holiday!

5. This is Halloween - Nightmare Before Christmas

Let's face it, we all know there had to be a Disney song in here, it is me after all. This song completely describes Halloween to a T, and listening to this track always get me in the Halloween spirit.

4. Feed My Frankenstein - Alice Cooper

There are a lot of Alice Cooper songs that are great for Halloween, but as this one is about a particular monster, and relating to the monster within that we 'feed' (especially at Halloween) it is perfect for this time of year.
I love how old school it sounds too!

3. Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell

This song is so creep-tastic! I find this an incredibly fun song to sing and dance to, and really makes me want to party any time I hear it! I also love how it mentions the classic Hitchcock movie, Psycho.

2. Everybody - Backstreet Boys

The video to this song just screams Halloween. It starts out like a horror movie, with the Backstreet Boys turning into Vampires, Werewolves, the Phantom of the Opera, Mummies and Lizard men. It is such a fun video to watch, and I just love the beat. It makes me want to dance!

1. Thriller - Michael Jackson

Now this is the epitome of Halloween music. This classic MJ song is creepy yet fun, it can get anyone up on the dancefloor at a party. The video always used to creep me out, the zombies were pretty scary! With the spooky narrator and MJ's fantastic voice, this song is always at the top of my list for Halloween songs!

Below is my Spotify Halloween playlist if anyone is interested in seeing what else I like to listen to at this time of year!

A Wedding Day to Remember | prettylittlewriter

For today's post, I thought I'd do something a little more personal and share with you all one of the happiest and proudest days of my life that I have experienced so far.

My lovely niece and her now husband got married!
Everything about the wedding was beautiful and perfect in every way.
Yes there were a few stressful moments, where panic set in about running out of time for make up and hair, and whether we even liked the way we looked (after all, what girl doesn't worry about that when it's an important day?), but the day as a whole couldn't have been better and celebrated with such lovely people.

So I thought I'd share with you all some of the recently acquired wedding photographs taken by the photographers hired for the day.
(Quick warning, this post is going to be fairly long!)

Getting ready was such good fun, until we realised we had half an hour left to get ready and head to the church! That was when the panicking began!
As you can see in the following pictures though, the Bride looked absolutely stunning, so the stress and panic was worth it :)

I was incredibly privileged to have been chosen as a bridesmaid. To be a big part of my niece's special day was such a lovely feeling and I couldn't have been happier for her.

We also panicked about the weather, as it looked dull and wet most of the morning, until we actually needed to head to the church, then the sky cleared up and the sun was shining!

All the boys looked super smart in their suits (how badass do they look here?!)

The ceremony was beautiful, many tears were shed, and it was with great pride and pleasure to see my gorgeous niece finally marry her prince!

The theme was carnival fun and vintage fair, which looked absolutely gorgeous indoors with all the flowers and glass jars. The carnival theme included a sweet(candy) table indoors, with some absolutely awesome fairground games outside such as test your strength, hook a duck and coconut throwing!

We all had some lovely group photographs taken, and of course, the blushing bride and groom had some more romantic ones!

The evening party was such good fun, with all the carnival games and such good company, it couldn't have been anything else. Everyone danced, laughed and had lots of fun in the kissing booth!

The newly wed couple looked incredibly gorgeous, and we ended the night with fireworks and sparklers. A perfect ending to a perfect day.
